School Demographics and Geographical Location
Joseph H. Gaudet is in a beneficial geographical location and the school demographics are diverse. The middle school is located on 1113 Adquidneck Avenue in Middletown, Rhode Island 02842. It is not far from Middletown High School, is surrounded by many houses, the Calvary United Methodist Church, and the Calvary Christian Preschool. In the survey that was taken by the students, 50.6% were male, 46.1% were female, and 3.3% did not want to say. Even though the majority of the students are White, 70.6%, there are many other ethnicities of the remaining students at this school. The other students are American Indian, Asian, African American, Native Hawaiian, or are more than one race.

Student AchievementJoseph H. Gaudet Middle School successfully made AYP, but regarding the NECAP scores, they had a mix of good and bad test scores. The 5th graders did not meet the average proficiency of the state in math, reading, or writing. But, the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders proficiency percentages were significantly above the state's average proficiency. The school did exceptionally well and met all of their targets for index proficiency scores, percent of students tested, and for the attendance rate. The target rates on index proficiency scores for English were 83.9% and for Math, 73.1%. The target rates on the percent of students tested was 95% for English and Math. Lastly, for attendance the school reached 95.8% while the state reached only 93.8%. Having students regularly attend school helps them become more successful students and prepares them better for the state tests. Good attendance rates are beneficial for students because they are able to get the most out of their educational experience.

TeachingThe teachers at Joseph H. Gaudet Middle School are a vital contribution to this school success. All of the teachers at Joseph H. Gaudet are highly qualified teachers. Rhode Island has 3% of teachers that are educating students and they are not highly qualified. Having all highly qualified teachers helps this middle school meet the requirements of the state and go above and beyond the requirements and average ratings. Also, they keep up with the standard statewide teacher-student ratio of 1:11. The students reported in a survey that they feel respected by their teachers. The teachers become involved in the students education to ensure that they will graduate from high school and will be prepared for whatever they choose to do next. In the survey, it was found that 96.8% of the students reported that they believe they will graduate from high school and 75.1% plan on attending a four year college. Other students will use their education from Middletown to succeed in other paths they take in life. Some plan on going into the military, a trade school, a two year college, a community college, and to work full time or part time. Most of the students have specific plans of what they would like to do and value their education.

Family, Community, and Home LifeThe students that attend Joseph H. Gaudet Middle School have a supportive family and community and they enjoy their home life. Their community is extremely supportive and this helps them become more successful in school. The students are involved in many activities in the community outside of school such as babysitting, dance, church, music, sports, volunteering, and work. The survey showed students have parents that are interested in what their doing in school, care about their grades, and think that their children are attending a good school. The survey also showed that students have adults in the community that think they will go to college and encourage them not to give up when things get tough. They also have friends they can talk to about their problems. They family and community of these students are great and they are one of the reasons these students do so well in school.

Safe and Supportive SchoolsJoseph H. Gaudet is extremely supportive and values safety in the school. There have only been 54 incidents of suspicion compared to the 14,730 incidents in the state that took place. The students reported that they are not afraid to attend school and are almost never afraid to use the bathrooms. They also said that they are almost never afraid to walk to and from school. The students understand there will be consequences if they choose to disobey a rule. They believe that the discipline at their school is very fair. During fire drills and lockdowns they are confident that they know what to do in order to be safe. The school takes student safety very seriously and will do what they need to so they can make sure their students feel comfortable. Most students reported in a survey that they feel they can talk to the staff if they are having any problems. The school is very safe and supportive and this can also be proven by looking at the stability index of 88% and mobility index of 12%.

Funding and Resources
The school gets an exceptional amount of funding and resources which is put towards improving the school. The school gets $1,101,345.60 of district property value per student. Most students think that the inside and outside of their school looks nice. The school has a computer lab, and almost all of the computers work well. Their books are somewhat new and most of the students have their own book. The school is well supplied, the gym has plenty of equipment for each student, there is always soap in the bathroom, and the bathrooms are always open during school hours. Also, the students report in a survey that the desks are a good size for them. Having an attractive school helps motivate the students to continue to attend.

ConclusionJoseph H. Gaudet Middle School is a great school that is interested in the well being of their students. The students have great academic achievement because of everything the school offers. This middle school has great teachers, is safe and supportive, is in the middle of a great community, and has funding and resources which help them continue to improve the school. The students and the community both agree that this middle school is a good place to receive their education. The students benefit from the wide variety of things Joseph H. Gaudet has to offer.
